Crafting Refinements: Wasteless Wood
Changes wooden fence gate, trapdoor, and wood recipes to have a greater yield
!Crafting Refinements
This pack is part of a series meant to refine the various recipes found in Minecraft to be balanced, consistent, and convenient.
This pack should work on the latest version of Minecraft, even if I haven't updated the metadata yet. Please report an issue if it doesn't function in the latest update.
Why Does This Exist?
While there are many data packs that tweak recipes, none provided a cohesive set of changes that prioritized balance, convenience, and consistency at the time Crafting Refinements was created. This pack has been split off to allow for greater modularity.
Design Philosophy
There are some general rules that Minecraft recipes generally follow (and which this datapack seeks to remove exceptions to)
- Recipes should resemble the final product
- Similar outputs should have similar recipes (minor differences are allowed for different material types)
- Crafting results should be proportional to their input (some loss is acceptable, and often expected)
- Specialized stations (stonecutter, blast furnace, etc.) should have equal or better rates
- Crafting results should not grant an overabundance of materials
- A block created with a 3x3 of the same material should be unpackable
- A block created with a 2x2 of the same material should not be unpackable
- Brewing recipes should not use full blocks, tools, or armor as ingredients
- Time is an important resource and should be spent on fun gameplay
- Impact on inventory clutter should be kept in mind
- Recipes with the same output should be grouped in the recipe book
What Are the Changes?
More Gates
This is a simple part of the datapack that increases the number of fence gates you receive to two. It grants greater freedom to use them for decoration. If this isn't your jam, it also gives you an easier means to avoid the issue of multiple animals getting stuck trying to get through the one-block entrance of your pen.
More Trapdoors
Trapdoors are great decoration blocks as well as useful in various technical builds. So why, pray tell, do six planks condense down into two thin slabs of wood? VanillaTweaks (VT) takes the mathematical approach and outputs 12 trapdoors! I find this a bit excessive as well as unrealistic (There is a lot of waste when working with wood!), so I opted for 6 as a result. This helps prevent inventory clutter while still meaning you only need to deforest a third of what you had to before. If you want the rates offered by VT, check out Crafting Refinements: Stonecutter Solutions!
More Wood
This is another set of changes inspired by VT and implemented myself due to recipe book issues when the original crafting refinements pack was initially made. It increases the amount of Wood and Hyphae you get from Logs and Stems respectively to 4. A simple change, but a welcome one when you're building with symmetry.
Also works with stripped logs too. As an added bonus, I split the stripped wood and normal wood recipes into two groups in the recipe book to make crafting easier.
These recipe changes seek to follow rules 3, 4, 5, 9, 10, and 11.
