Crafting Refinements: Copper Consistency
Standardizes the copper and iron bar, chain, door, and trapdoor recipe to be more in line with wooden doors and trapdoors
!Crafting Refinements
This pack is part of a series meant to refine the various recipes found in Minecraft to be balanced, consistent, and convenient.
This pack should work on the latest version of Minecraft, even if I haven't updated the metadata yet. Please report an issue if it doesn't function in the latest update.
Why Does This Exist?
While there are many data packs that tweak recipes, none provided a cohesive set of changes that prioritized balance, convenience, and consistency at the time Crafting Refinements was created. This pack has been split off to allow for greater modularity.
Design Philosophy
There are some general rules that Minecraft recipes generally follow (and which this datapack seeks to remove exceptions to)
- Recipes should resemble the final product
- Similar outputs should have similar recipes (minor differences are allowed for different material types)
- Crafting results should be proportional to their input (some loss is acceptable, and often expected)
- Specialized stations (stonecutter, blast furnace, etc.) should have equal or better rates
- Crafting results should not grant an overabundance of materials
- A block created with a 3x3 of the same material should be unpackable
- A block created with a 2x2 of the same material should not be unpackable
- Brewing recipes should not use full blocks, tools, or armor as ingredients
- Time is an important resource and should be spent on fun gameplay
- Impact on inventory clutter should be kept in mind
- Recipes with the same output should be grouped in the recipe book
What Are the Changes?
Metal doors and trapdoors have long suffered from a fabrication paradox. Six iron ingots somehow compress into three full doors, yet four ingots only manage to produce a single trapdoor, despite the trapdoor being half the size. To make matters worse, the iron and copper trapdoor layouts don’t resemble their wooden counterparts. This all stems from the fact that metal bars borrow the wooden trapdoor pattern, for not good reason as it doesn't look anything like bars.
More Metal Trapdoors
First step to fixing these issues was to change the trapdoor recipe to match the wooden trapdoor layout and increase its output. Thus while a steeper upfront cost, are cheaper in bulk.
More Accurate Bar Recipe
Now, however, bars and metal trapdoors use the same recipes. To straighten this out, I reworked the bar recipes so they actually resemble bars in the crafting grid.
Fewer Metal Doors
If six ingots make two trapdoors, they should not make three doors. Thus metal doors are scaled back to a single output for six ingots (what were you doing with the other three anyway?). Additionally, wooden doors use six full blocks while metal doors use two-thirds of a full block. Thus it makes sense that six ingots would make fewer doors.
More Chains
I also increased the chain output from one to four to make decoration easier and to keep its yield more in line with bars.
These recipe changes seek to follow rules 1, 2, 3, and 5.
