They make notes not get quieter with distance. However, are limited by the range at which note sounds will not play entirely.

How Global Notes Studio works.

Global Notes Studio works by changing the note sounds into stereo files.

Stereo files do not apply direction and, in recent versions, also doesn't apply volume over distance.
However the sounds.json has been included for older versions.
