Snow On Stairs

IMPORTANT WARNING: This beta is intended for test only! A world backup is recommended if you plan to use this datapack in your main world or in your server

This is the first beta of a full datapack rewrite, with the full release scheduled for Minecraft 26.1!

Starting with this version, the datapack will now use block displays instead of invisible armor stands with custom models, which will lead to better visuals and, most importantly, better performances.

This also mean that a resource pack is no longer necessary, so it will be easier and quicker to set everything up.

Some major QoL updates has also been added to this version, and the list of blocks that can be snow-logged has been slightly changed to include some previously excluded blocks and vice-versa.

Unfortunately, due to Minecraft technical limitations, it is still not perfect the way I intend it to be, but I'm sure you'll appreciate these changes

Here's what changed in this version:

• Complete datapack rewrite. It now uses block displays and interaction entities for better performance and player-based scoreboard objectives for multiplayer compatibility

• A resource pack is no longer required to make the Datapack work properly

• The following blocks can now be snow-logged

• Waterlogged and underwater blocks can no longer be snow-logged

• Added snow-removal functionality

  • Right click with an empty hand while sneaking on the base of a snow-logged block (or on top of it if is a bottom slab) to remove the snow without breaking the block

• Sneaking to snow-log a block is no longer required, except for blocks that have an interaction (controllable via the #snow_on_stairs:snowable_blocks_sneaking block tag). This include:

  • All standing, wall and hanging signs (under the #minecraft:all_signs tag)
  • All anvils (under the #minecraft:anvil tag)
  • All beds (under the #minecraft:beds tag)
  • All buttons (under the #minecraft:buttons tag)
  • Chests, Trapped Chests, Ender Chests and all Copper chests (under the #minecraft:copper_chests tag)
  • All Copper Golem Statues (under the #minecraft:copper_golem_statues tag)
  • All Doors (under the #minecraft:doors tag)
  • All Fence Gates (under the #minecraft:fence_gates tag)
  • All Flower Pots (under the #minecraft:flower_pots tag)
  • All Trapdoors (under the #minecraft:trapdoors tag)
  • All Wooden Shelves (under the #minecraft:wooden_shelves tag)
  • Beacon
  • Bell
  • Brewing Stand
  • Cake
  • Chest

• Changed the credits advancements appearance and descriptions

• The snow layer that is dropped from a block when breaking it or removing it can be controlled via the snow_on_stairs:snow loot table

• The snow layer will drop from a block when breaking it or removing it only if th block_drops gamerule is set to true

• Added predicates and block tags to control the behavior and functionality of the datapack, and to allow further customization and compatibility with modded blocks

  • #snow_on_stairs:snowable_blocks_no_sneaking block tag
    • Blocks that can be snow-logged without requiring the player to sneak
  • #snow_on_stairs:snowable_blocks_sneaking block tag
    • Blocks that can be snow-logged that requires the player to sneak
  • #snow_on_stairs:snowable_slabs block tag
    • Slabs that can be snow-logged
    • Includes all slabs under the #minecraft:slabs tag.
      • If a slab is not under the #minecraft:slabs tag and is not added to this tag, but is in the #snow_on_stairs:snowable_blocks tag, the snow layer will always be placed under the slab, regardless of its state
  • #snow_on_stairs:snowable_stairs block tag
    • Stairs that can be snow-logged
    • Inclused all stairs under the #minecraft:stairs tag.
      • If a stair is not under the #minecraft:stairs tag and is not added to this tag, but is in the #snow_on_stairs:snowable_blocks tag, the snow layer will always be placed under the slab, regardless of its state and shape
  • #snow_on_stairs:has_lower_interaction block tag
    • Blocks that has a lower interaction point than normal, allowing them to be interacted and destroyed when snow-logged
      • All pressure plates (under the #minecraft:pressure_plates tag)
      • All buttons (under the #minecraft:buttons tag)
      • All rails (under the #minecraft:rails tag)
      • Redstone repeater
      • Redstone comparator
  • #snow_on_stairs:invalid_for_snow_placement block tag
    • Blocks that cannot support a snow layer. If a snowable block is on top of one of these block, it can't be snow-logged
    • This includes air and basically all blocks that don't have a solid top face
  • snow_on_stairs:should_destroy_snow predicate
    • Defines when a snow layer placed on or under a block should be removed if the block gets updated
  • snow_on_stairs:valid_for_snow_placment predicate
    • Defines when a snow layer can be placed on or under a block

• Made datapack texts translatable via resource packs. You can localize the texts used by credit advancements and the datapack selection screen by using these translation keys in your resource pack

  • snow_on_stairs.pack.description
    • Changes the pack description as it appears on the Datapack selection screen and on the Datapack root credit advancement
  • snow_on_stairs.pack.title
    • Change the pack title as it appears on the Datapack root credit advancement
  • snow_on_stairs.original_author.description
    • Change the original author description as it appears on the Datapack oOBoomberOo credit advancement
  • snow_on_stairs.author.description
    • Change the author description as it appears on the Datapack Minehendrix credit advancement

• Prevented existing snow layers from being deleted when snow-logging a block

  • Only the "placed" snow layer will be removed if the block has been successfully snow-logged

• Updated the pack.mcmeta file to better support future Minecraft updates
