Professor Porker's Legendary Dungeons

A datapack for cobblemon that adds large dungeon-like structures inspired by iconic scenes from pokemon games / movies.

6.7K
16

This is an exploration themed datapack that adds massive dungeon structures that spawn in the world (similar to trial chambers) which are based on iconic landmarks / scenes from pokemon games / movies.

Currently, it is centered around the fight or flight mod (although this may change for Cobblemon 1.7) which allows the player to utilize pokemon to aid in battle against mobs, as well as allow pokemon to be used as enemies within the dungeon that you can fight as either the player, or by using pokemon battles.

Progress through the structure, fighting more challenging mobs as you approach the end, where you will likely face off against a high level legendary / mythical pokemon.

Dependencies:

All required dependencies (plus Sodium and Shaders)can be found in this modpack, which includes the config version of fight or flight needed for the dungeons to function (not up to date for 1.7, now all that is needed is Cobblemon and Mega Showdown) /modpacks/legendary-dungeons-dependencies

  • Cobblemon (obviously)
  • Mega Showdown mod (can technically still play without it but I plan to rely on this much more in future updates)
  • Simple TMs and TRs mod (not entirely needed, will only break certain loot tables)

IMPORTANT FOR UPDATING TO 1.7:

  • The fight or flight mod is no longer needed since base cobblemon has implemented an aggression mechanic in 1.7. Not only that, but fight or flight is not updated to 1.7, so you need to uninstall it from your modpack if you wish to update to 1.7
  • Huge structure blocks mod is no longer needed for the modpack to work

Gameplay Mechanics

Spoiler

While all structures in the game can be properly completed using normal methods, I wanted to add secrets / gimmicks throughout the datapack to reward players' knowledge and use of niche mechanics, as well as breathe life into certain mechanics that often get overlooked.

Hidden Rooms:

Spoiler

Most of the main dungeons will be littered with hidden rooms throughout the structure. They tend to always have a hidden lever somewhere marked with suspicious sand / gravel which opens a hidden entrance somewhere else in the area. Look for suspicious gravel to find where a hidden lever might be, then look for a light source to find the entrance that just opened up. Secret rooms often have higher quality loot, and safety from gimigoul chests, so you know if you found a hidden room full of treasure, you are not at risk of having a gimigoul ruin your shot at good gear. Archeology:

Spoiler

Normal archeology in minecraft sucks. Nobody uses it, and many people don't even know how it works. This is why I tried to incorporate it in a more interesting manner to enhance the gameplay of your playthrough. Not only are suspicious blocks used to mark hidden areas in certain structures, but they also have useful loot tables that reward players that take the time to investigate certain features. SusLoot

  • Secret Marker: These pieces are used to mark where hidden levers are. They have an extremely large loot table filled with lots of junk, but with the potential to find ridiculously rare resources like rare candies or ancient debris. The idea being that you always have a tiny chance to find something good. (Note that the chances of getting debris are so low that it would be faster to just mine it normally. This is only to provide an intense dopamine rush for that one guy who is lucky enough to get it)

  • All Type Gems: These suspicious blocks usually spawn in hidden treasure rooms in the form of suspicious sand. Once brushed, they have the the chance to provide any of the type gems available in the game, assisting players in whatever crafting recipes would need them.

  • Agriculture: These suspicious blocks are often decorating the main rooms of large structures from the datapack. Once brushed, their loot tables mostly contain seeds and agriculture items useful for players to find any missing crops they might be looking for, or to provide a solid start to whatever farm they may intend to start.

  • Structure specific maps: These blocks contain unique loot for whatever structure they are a part of, and often have the chance to provide an explorer map to one of the main dungeons. This is the main way for players to locate the large structures that make up the primary portion of this datapack. If you are excited to find something from this datapack, chances are, it can be located from one of the maps provided by these brushing sites.

Block Restrictions:

Spoiler

To keep gameplay interesting and encourage secrets, most of the large dungeons containing legendary pokemon also contain several guardian rooms that contain an elder guarding which prevents the player from breaking any blocks through mining fatigue.

On top of that, they are protected by a function which prevents the player from using beds, healing machines, and pcs when within 150 blocks of the dungeon. This restricts the players ability to swap party members or heal pokemon. Forcing them to manage their team more wisely and utilize healing items / moves as the primary way to heal pokemon.

Considering this, there are usually hidden areas / minigames that require the player to move or break specific blocks. Usually by finding hidden buttons / levers, or by utilizing a trident to break walls of dripstone to progress to a secret area. I’m planning to add a variety of methods to bypass mining fatigue restrictions that fit the theme of every structure, so stay tuned for more info.

Balancing Pokemon Health / Combat:

Spoiler

A key aspect of the main dungeons is fighting alongside your pokemon, in a very dungeoncrawler like playstyle. But an important thing to consider is managing the health in your party of pokemon. Do you think that bringing out your main pokemon to clear a floor is worthwhile, when it might be needed to fight a harder enemy later. Especially considering the boss legendary at the end of the dungeon, it is sure to keep you on your toes when utilizing your pokemon in battle.

Explorer / Locator Maps:

Spoiler

Through various methods, the player can obtain maps to important structures within the game. This has cross compatability with modded structures, as well as the main ones from the datapack and vanilla Minecraft and Cobblemon. Maps to modded structures are still obtainable in survival, but will not point to anything if the player gets one, so don't waste resources trying to get one unless you know you have the proper mod installed.

All Obtainable Maps:

Spoiler

Explorer Maps (above ground structures)

  • Rayquaza's Sky Pillar (from this datapack)

Locator Maps (For structures underground / not visible)

  • Ancient City (Vanilla Minecraft)
  • Fishing Boat (Cobblemon)
  • Shipwreck Cove mini dungeon (Cobblemon)

Extra Modded Structures (Requires the listed mod to properly function)

  • Mega Site (Mega Showdown Mod) (Locator)
  • Wishing Weald (Mega Showdown Mod) (Explorer)

Small Structures

Spoiler These more common structures serve to assist with beginner players and also have a chance at providing the player with an explorer map to one of the main dungeons. The map can usually be found either within the chests that spawn in the structures, or by brushing suspicious sand / gravel near the area.

Overtaken Pillager Outpost:

Find pillager outpost in a state of decay that have been taken over by roaming gangs of squirtle (a reference to the iconic squirtle squad episode). This structure contains food based loot as well as chests with the same loot tables as regular pillager outposts. It also has a chance to contain an explorer map to rayquaza's sky pillar in either one of the squirtle based chests or in the suspicious gravel around the area. Note: The squirtle that spawn here are holding sunglasses like they did in the anime, which aren't visible as of Cobblemon 1.6, but will be in version 1.7 Squirtle Squad takes over Pillager Outpost

The Overtaken Outpost also contains many pitfall traps, similar to the one Ash fell into in the squirtle squad episode. Be sure to look for wandering traders who were unfortunate enough to fall into them. You may just find some useful items.

Ancient Battlegrounds:

These serve as references to iconic moments in Pokemon, and that tie into specific dungeons in the pack.

All variants:

Spoiler

Groudon vs Kyogre Island Remenant: This structure serves as a reference to the cutscene in the games and gives the player the chance to obtain the red / blue orbs which may come in handy for the 2 dungeons in the future. There are multiple variants of this structure which tell a story of who won that battle.

Abandoned Research Outposts:

Spoiler

These small structures are sprinkled throughout various areas in the world and serve 2 main purposes. 1 is to teach the player about niche cobblemon mechanics, and another is to provide some lorebuilding through the journal entry series of written books. This is from the perspective of Professor Sans, an explorer / professor documenting events / structures / features throughout the cobblemon world. These also provide hints as to how the player can unlock secret features (but more on that later). Abandoned Research Outpost - Tortera Variants

001 - Unique Minecraft Tortera Forms

This structure explains how to evolve a grotle into a tortera of a specific sapling form. It spawns with a level 29 grotle (with a 1/8 chance to be a shiny) and a single chest containing various miscellaneous items as well as potentially every sapling that is associated with a tortera variant. It also may contain a map to Rayquaza’s Sky Pillar from a small chance within the chest, or that can possibly be found by brushing through the surrounding suspicious gravel.

002 - Ancient Pokeballs and Tumblestones

This small structure gives a quick demo and lore surrounding tumblestones and how they can be used to craft ancient pokeballs.

003 - Medicinal Brews and Consumables for Pokemon

This structure guides the player on how to make medicinal brew, then assists them in following the crafting tree all the way to a full restore. Providing at least 3 max level healing items for pokemon to any players willing to follow along.

004 - Biome Dependent Magicarp / Garados Variants

(will lead to Kyoger’s Underwater City in a future update) This structure has 3 variants which teach the player about the unique Magicarp variants, and also provides a map to Kyoger's dungeon.

xxx - Mooshroom Milktank Variants (coming soon)

(will lead to Groudon’s Vulcano)

Primary Dungeons

Spoiler

These are the main focus of the datapack. Similar to trial chambers, they are large structures filled with trial spawners and various enemy pokemon (that serve as actual enemies that attack you thanks to Fight or Flight). These generally tend to be end game level difficulty and reward the player with high quality loot, and the chance to capture a legendary / mythical pokemon. Generally, they are filled with puzzles, secret rooms (marked by suspicious gravel), tons of powerful enemies, neat details, and the incorporation of pokemon as a vital part of the combat mechanic. A common quirk throughout most of these structures is the chance to perform secret events (hinted at in certain journal entries) that alter the main pokemon battle in some way (usually spawning it as a shiny or with better stats). Other gameplay mechanics include being under an elder guardian’s mining fatigue so the player is forced to utilize their knowledge of niche minecraft mechanics (or perform puzzles / parkour) to discover hidden secrets / events. It just serves as another layer of neat gameplay mechanics and lorebuilding that are sure to improve the exploration of any playthrough.

Rayquaza’s Sky Pillar

Spoiler

This massive structure has 8 floors and 4 levels of difficulty that are sure to give the player a fun challenge. It spawns in mountainy, high latitude areas like the Frozen Peaks, Jagged Peaks, and Stony Peaks, with a spooky / ghost themed stone interior.

Progressing from Iron, to enchanted Iron, to diamond, to enchanted diamond / netherite gear levels, each level brings increased difficulty and better loot. The player will be met with waves of trial spawners and juiced up enemy pokemon (made to deal extra damage to the player) until they eventually make it to the top. Once at the 2nd to last level, the player will be met with an armor stand holding a jade orb. If they pick up the orb from the armor stand’s hand, an event will trigger and rayquaza will spawn at the very top.

The secret for this structure can be found within the first elder guardian secret room. Once entered, the player will find a journal entry detailing how they can potentially get a shiny rayquaza. (Note, shiny and regular rayquaza spawns do not conflict with each other. You can do both in the same structure, but only 1 of each).

Advanced Features

Spoiler
  • Custom Explorer Maps to modded structures (mostly for base Cobblemon and Mega Showdown)
  • Modded Biome integration for spawned structures
  • Certain blocks (like beds or the pc) are unable to be used around dungeons

Custom Explorer / Locator Map System:

Spoiler

Through various methods, the player can obtain rare maps that lead to important structures in the datapack. These range from custom structures like the dungeons in this datapack, or existing modded structures like the Shipwreck Cove mini dungeons from base Cobblemon, or the Wishing Weald from Mega Showdown. Note: that the maps for modded structures won't work unless you have the mod installed. They are still obtainable in the datapack regardless, but don't waste your resources on getting a map to a structure from a mod you know you don't have. (so long as you installed all the dependencies, this shouldn't be an issue)

The maps are divided into 2 simple categories:

  • Explorer Maps imply the structure is above ground and visible
  • Locator Maps are for underground structures, so expect to go mining once you reach the x

Obtaining Through Trades:

Spoiler

Besides looting them from chests or suspicious blocks, one of the main ways to obtain the custom maps is by trading with custom villagers / wandering traders from this pack.

They usually cost around 32 emeralds and 32 relic coins, so be prepared with the nessisary funds when exploring.

Buying a map through trades like this gives the player a ticket to the nearest structure of the selected type. Once obtained, the player must hold the map in their main hand, then, a tick function will identify which map you purchased, and generate an explorer or locator map to the nearest structure of whatever you chose.

Feel free to use this for whatever server / worlds you would like. Although I would appreciate it if you credited me if you use it for a public server.
