Cave Entrance without Beacon
The light overlay shows the blocks with some skylight as safe during the day, while it shows the ones that are never safe deeper in the cave with red.

Cave Entrance with Beacon
This image shows how a beacon in range will prevent mob spawn for blocks with some skylight even during the night (hence the purple overlay). Note how the deep part of the cave is not affected by the beacon.
