Infernos Otter Taming

Otters in Critters and Companions open clams and steal the show — but they were never meant to be pets. Infernos Otter Taming is a small compatibility mod that makes them proper river companions: tame them with fish, tell them to stay or follow, and get a few useful perks for exploring waterways.

Features

Tame with fish

• Feed any item in #minecraft:fishes (raw cod, salmon, tropical fish, pufferfish, etc.).
• About 1 in 3 chance per fish (hearts on success, smoke on fail).
• Clams are not used for taming (they stay for C&C's normal open/eat behaviour).

Stay / follow

• Empty-hand right-click (main hand) toggles stay ↔ follow.
• Works on land and in water.
• Owner-only; other players cannot order your otter.

Care

• Feed raw fish while the otter is hurt to heal.
• Friendly fire off — your attacks won't damage your own otter.
• Tamed otters are set to persist (won't despawn).

Useful companion perks

Perk	What it does
Pearl forager	While following near water, about every 4 minutes the otter finds a clam or pearl.
Lucky clams	When a tamed otter opens a clam, pearl chance is ~55% (wild C&C is lower).
Swim buddy	If you're swimming within 12 blocks, you get short Dolphin's Grace pulses and a little air restore.

Breeding / hand-feeding food at full health still uses Critters and Companions' own logic.

How to use

1. Find (or spawn) an otter near rivers.
2. Feed raw fish until hearts appear.
3. Empty hand → right-click to switch between stay and follow.
4. Explore rivers with your buddy; keep raw fish for healing.

FAQ

Does empty hand toggle work with items in the off-hand?
Toggle uses the main hand. Keep the main hand empty (or holding a non-food item).

Can I ride the otter?
No — this mod does not add riding.

Does it work in multiplayer?
Yes, if the mod is on the server and clients. Only the owner can sit/follow/heal.
