For future updates, edit the pack.mcmeta file to the current pack_format value. I believe Mojang is currently working on updating the format of the pack.mcmeta file, linked in the first article below.

If you want to edit the pack.mcmeta file for a version below 1.21.9, you can use this generator tool for that. All you should have to do is change the pack_format value.
