the above scenario is now end-to-end valid in the plugin variant. for the datapack only use, the following commands can be used to toggle refunds such that modified items do not get consumed only to then be "refunded" as a pristine variant thereby granting valid materials that did not exist prior.

This is a limitaiton of Minecraft. Without doing constant snapshots of inventories (TPS heavy), we cannot properly refund items as we cannot know what custom data may exist on the consumed items, component data is not read by Minecraft for crafts (or at least not exposed in datapack mcfunctions).

I recommend disabling the refunds, the item output slot in crafting grid still clearly informs of valid material requirements. !Replace this with a description

add datapack toggle to disable refunding of materials as datapacks cannot read item components to be able to reliably distinguish valid from invalid items for material crafting
