Drop any PNG into .minecraft/config/guicrafter/assets/ and it appears in the picker alongside the built-in shapes, converted automatically. Small blocky images with a strong outline work best.
How to use it Press ] in game, or type /guibuilder (rebind in Options → Controls → GUI Crafter) Click through the pages down the left. The preview at the top updates as you click. Press Apply.
That's it. Changes appear straight away.
How it works, and why that matters
GUI Crafter doesn't hook Minecraft's renderer. When you press Apply it composites your look into real textures and writes them out as a normal resource pack in resourcepacks/GUI Crafter/, then enables it and reloads.
Three things follow from that:
It's stable. No mixins into rendering code, so it doesn't break every time Mojang moves something. It plays nicely. It's an ordinary resource pack sitting at the top of your stack. Anything not touching the GUI is unaffected. Your look outlives the mod. Uninstall GUI Crafter and the pack it made stays in your resourcepacks folder, still working.
Client side only. Works on any server — including vanilla ones — because the server never knows.
