FlexBorder
FlexBorder adds a fully configurable world border system designed for PvP, survival, and Battle Royale–style servers.
This mod is a reimagining of my old mod Border like Battle Royale.
FlexBorder provides a fully server-controlled rectangular world border and a built-in Battle Royale match system with development, shrinking zones, player elimination, spectator support, and optional Xaero's World Map integration.
What This Mod Adds
FlexBorder replaces the traditional square world-border gameplay with a configurable rectangular safe zone that can move and shrink over time.
The mod can be used as a simple custom world border or as a complete Battle Royale controller.
By default, the border covers a 2000×2000 area:
X: -1000 to 1000
Z: -1000 to 1000
Admins can change it at any time.
Features
- Asymmetric rectangular world border with independent X/Z coordinates
- Smooth border shrinking and repositioning
- Pre-generated shrinking phases with planned future safe zones
- Soft pushing toward the safe zone when slightly outside the border
- Rescue teleportation when a player gets too far outside the border
- Temporary fall-damage protection after border rescue teleports
- Configurable development phase before permanent elimination begins
- Max-health penalty on death during development, similar to Mediumcore
- Automatic transition from development into Hardcore mode
- Automatic player elimination after death during Hardcore
- Automatic winner detection and match completion
- Automatic safe random player scattering when the match starts
- Ready-check system before the match begins
- Full-screen countdown before players are scattered
- Built-in spectator support using Minecraft's spectator interface
- Persistent match and border state saved with the world
- Automatic synchronization when players join or change dimensions
- Per-dimension border data
- Automatic handling of current and upcoming safe zones
Battle Royale Match Flow
FlexBorder can control the entire match automatically.
An admin configures and starts the match using one command.
All eligible players in the current dimension are automatically registered as participants.
Players receive a clickable READY button in chat instead of having to enter commands themselves.
Once every participant is ready, a full-screen countdown begins:
5
4
3
2
1
0
Players are then teleported to random safe locations inside the border and the development phase begins.
During development:
- The border remains stable
- Players can respawn
- Each death reduces their maximum health
- Maximum health cannot be reduced below 1 HP
When development ends, Hardcore mode begins.
During Hardcore:
- Death permanently eliminates the player from the match
- Eliminated players become spectators
- Spectators can use Minecraft's spectator hotbar to select and follow remaining players
- The safe zone continues progressing through its planned shrinking phases
- The last surviving participant is automatically declared the winner
Solo matches are also supported, allowing the complete match system to be tested with only one player.
Zone System
Battle Royale shrinking is based on planned zone phases.
Each upcoming safe zone is generated inside the previous one, meaning the next zone is known before the current shrinking phase begins.
A match follows a flow similar to:
Current Zone
↓
Pause / Next Zone Preview
↓
Smooth Shrinking
↓
New Current Zone
↓
Next Phase
This allows both players and map integrations to display exactly where the next safe zone will be.
The border can shrink and reposition at the same time instead of always collapsing toward the center.
Xaero's World Map Integration
FlexBorder includes optional integration with Xaero's World Map.
Xaero's World Map is not required to use FlexBorder.
If Xaero's World Map is installed on the client, FlexBorder automatically enables additional map rendering.
The map displays:
- The current active safe zone
- The next planned safe zone
This makes it possible to see both where the border currently is and where it will move during the next shrinking phase.
No separate compatibility addon is required.
Border Behavior
Players slightly outside the border are smoothly pushed back toward the safe zone instead of immediately taking damage.
Players who get too far outside trigger the rescue system:
- The player's screen is darkened
- A safe position near the border is calculated
- The player is teleported back toward the playable area
- A small inward impulse is applied
Because terrain around the border can include caves, cliffs, or underground areas, players receive temporary fall-damage protection after a rescue teleport. This protection only applies to fall damage caused immediately after the rescue and does not disable normal fall damage during gameplay.
Commands
FlexBorder intentionally keeps administration simple.
/flexborder start <developmentTime> <shrinkDistance> <shrinkTime> <pauseTime> <minSize>
Configure and prepare a Battle Royale match.
Example:
/flexborder start 600 200 60 120 20
This example creates:
- 600 seconds of development
- 200 blocks of size reduction per phase
- 60 seconds of shrinking
- 120 seconds between shrinking phases
- 20 blocks as the minimum final zone size
After the command is executed, players receive the READY prompt.
The match starts automatically once everyone is ready.
/flexborder border <x1> <z1> <x2> <z2>
Change the main playable border.
Example:
/flexborder border -1500 -1000 1500 1000
The border does not need to be square.
/flexborder status
Display the current match and border state.
/flexborder stop
Stop the current match and reset match-related state.
Permissions
All /flexborder administration commands require operator permissions.
Regular players cannot access match configuration, border controls, or administrative commands.
Player interaction with the match is handled automatically through the ready prompt and Minecraft's built-in spectator interface.
Use Cases
- Battle Royale servers
- Hardcore survival events
- PvP tournaments
- Dynamic shrinking arenas
- Survival events with an exploration phase
- Custom multiplayer minigames
- RPG or adventure maps with collapsing playable areas
