Against the Wild: Realistic Survival
Against the Wild is an immersive realism mod that transforms Minecraft survival into something that actually feels like fighting to stay alive. No magic shortcuts, no easy starts. The world is harsh, unforgiving, and beautiful just like the real wilderness
🌿 Against the Wild
Survival the way it was always meant to feel — real.
Against the Wild transforms Minecraft’s early game into a slower, grounded survival experience where tools must be earned, fire must be prepared, and every resource matters.
You will not begin by punching down a tree. First, you must search the wilderness for loose stones, fallen branches and flint. From those simple materials, you will gradually build your way toward reliable tools, warmth and shelter.
⚠️ Early Alpha
Against the Wild is currently in early Alpha.
The core survival progression is taking shape, but this is only the beginning. Features may be expanded, rebalanced or redesigned in future updates.
Feedback and bug reports are greatly appreciated.
🧭 Primitive Survival Progression
Your first steps now follow a more natural progression:
Gather resources → process flint → create bindings → build tools → collect wood and stone → prepare tinder → construct and light a fire
There are no instant shortcuts. Every tool requires preparation, and every new resource unlocks the next stage of survival.
🌾 Resources on the Ground
Freshly explored chunks contain physical resources scattered throughout the environment:
- Sticks — fallen branches found on the ground
- Small Rocks — loose pebbles scattered across the surface
- Rocks — heavier stones, especially common near water
- Flint — a rarer resource used for primitive cutting tools
Right-click a resource to collect it. There is no need to break the block underneath it.
Resource distribution depends on the environment:
- Rocks and flint are more common near rivers and shorelines.
- Loose stones can accumulate underwater.
- Rocks and flint can appear on cave floors.
- Ground resources are generated when an area is explored for the first time.
🌿 Plant Fiber and Primitive Rope
Breaking tall or short grass has a chance to produce Plant Fiber.
Plant Fiber is one of the first useful resources you can obtain. It can be turned into Primitive Rope, which is required to bind tool heads, handles and other primitive constructions together.
🪨 Flint Knapping
Flint cannot immediately be turned into a finished tool. It must first be shaped using another stone.
Flint Shards
Combine Flint with a Rock to break it into Flint Shards.
The Rock acts as a hammerstone and is returned after crafting.
Sharp Flint
A Flint Shard can then be worked again with a Rock to produce a sharp cutting edge.
Flint Axe Head
A larger axe head must be shaped separately before it can be attached to a handle.
This creates a more believable tool-making process than crafting a complete tool from raw materials in a single step.
🔪 Primitive Knife
The Primitive Knife is a quick but fragile flint tool.
It can be used as an early weapon and is also required for gathering natural materials such as birch bark.
- Damage: 4.5
- Durability: 50
- Faster than a sword
- Sharp, but easy to chip and break
🏹 Primitive Spear
The Primitive Spear provides both melee reach and an early ranged option.
Hold right-click to prepare a throw. The longer the spear is charged, the faster and harder it flies.
- Melee damage: 6
- Fully charged throw: 7.5 damage
- Durability: 80
- Slower than a sword
- Sticks into blocks and entities
- Can be retrieved after throwing
- Retains its durability when recovered
🪓 Primitive Flint Axe
Wood cannot be collected with bare hands. A properly assembled axe is required.
Creating the Primitive Flint Axe involves two separate steps:
- Shape a Flint Axe Head through knapping.
- Attach it to a wooden handle using Primitive Rope.
The resulting axe is deliberately slow and fragile. It is an essential survival tool rather than an instant way to clear an entire forest.
- Realistically slow woodcutting
- Limited durability
- Required for collecting logs
- Separate head and assembly process
🌳 Bark and Tinder
The Primitive Knife can remove bark from birch logs.
Bark harvesting is not instant. You must hold the knife against the tree while the character works, producing scraping sounds and bark particles.
After harvesting:
- The original log becomes stripped.
- A small amount of Birch Bark is obtained.
- The knife loses durability.
Birch Bark and dry Plant Fiber can be prepared into Tinder Bundles used for starting fires.
🔥 Primitive Fire Drill
Early fire is started with a Primitive Fire Drill, not flint and steel.
Prepared tinder must first be placed inside a suitable fire pit. The player then holds the fire drill directly against it for several seconds.
Fire-starting includes:
- A continuous working animation
- Progress feedback
- Friction sounds and particles
- A chance for the attempt to fail
- Tinder consumption after an attempt
- Reduced effectiveness in rain or wet conditions
Starting a fire outdoors is possible, but it requires preparation and protection from the weather.
🪵 World-Built Fire Pits
Fire pits are constructed physically in the world rather than crafted as a finished block.
Materials are added one at a time, and every construction stage is visible:
- Build a stone ring.
- Add individual kindling sticks.
- Add fuel logs.
- Place a Tinder Bundle in the centre.
- Use the Primitive Fire Drill to ignite it.
Once burning, a fire pit:
- Consumes stored fuel over time
- Accepts logs, planks, coal and charcoal
- Melts nearby snow
- Can spread fire to nearby flammable blocks
- Gradually goes out during rainfall
- Can be extinguished immediately with water
- Leaves hot embers before turning into ash
Kindling and logs remain visible while they burn instead of disappearing immediately.
Hot embers can be revived by adding fresh sticks and fuel.
🍖 Cooking Over Fire
A cooking rack can be constructed directly on a burning fire pit.
The rack is also built in visible stages:
- The first stick creates two supports.
- The second stick adds the horizontal cooking spit.
Once completed, the rack can hold up to four food items at the same time.
Food is displayed directly on the spit and cooks more slowly than it would on a standard Minecraft campfire.
🔨 Stone Hammer
The Stone Hammer is the first primitive mining tool.
Instead of using a thin piece of flint as a pickaxe, the tool uses a heavy stone head secured to a wooden handle with binding material.
It can be crafted using a Rock, a Stick and one of the following:
- Two Plant Fibers
- Primitive Rope
- String
The hammer can collect basic stone materials:
- Stone
- Cobblestone
- Mossy Cobblestone
- Granite
- Diorite
- Andesite
- Tuff
- Calcite
Broken stone produces 2–4 Small Rocks, with a chance to additionally produce a larger Rock.
The Stone Hammer cannot properly extract ores. Attempting to break one is extremely slow and destroys the ore without recovering metal.
Additional properties:
- Durability: 64
- Slow, heavy attack
- Harder stone consumes additional durability
- The wooden handle is recovered when the hammer breaks
- Can be repaired using stone or binding materials
✋ Your Bare Hands Are Not Tools
Wooden blocks cannot be harvested by punching them.
Logs require a proper axe, and trying to bypass this progression is either blocked or made extremely slow.
The goal is to make obtaining your first pieces of wood feel like a genuine survival milestone rather than an automatic first action.
🎯 The Vision
Against the Wild is being developed as a complete realistic survival overhaul.
Future updates will continue expanding systems such as:
- Hunger and nutrition
- Temperature and exposure
- Fatigue and exhaustion
- Shelter and weather protection
- Primitive crafting
- Tool progression
- Hunting and food preservation
- Injuries and recovery
- More environmental interactions
The objective is not difficulty for its own sake. Every mechanic should make the wilderness feel more physical, believable and rewarding to overcome.
